We are seeking a transformative leader and design advocate. A leader who brings fresh ideas, a human-centered design approach and a passion for crafting digital product experiences that deliver business value. In this role you will lead the Digital Enablement User Experience & Product Design team; a team of passionate and skilled design leaders, researchers and product owners working to create the next generation of experiences for our customers, agents and brokers. You will lead the development and execution of strategy, partner across technology and business to strengthen product mindset, integrate lean design practices and iterative research approaches on our agile teams. In addition, to overseeing the oversee continued development of our Design System.

This role is a leader of leaders.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Build and scale the digital product management and UX function across 25+ teams; ensuring excellence in work and efficiency in approach; evangelize lean design, user-centered approaches; partner with Engineering and stakeholders to achieve agility in execution and value achievement
  • Foster a dynamic, inclusive, highly engaging and growth-orientated work environment; grow, recruit and nurture a team of outstanding design and product professionals who are committed to creating products and services that exceed user expectations and achieve desired business outcome.
  • Lead with passion, motivate and inspire passion in others; create a culture of curiosity, experimentation, collaboration, achievement and candor; coach, mentor and develop skills that deepen knowledge and ability.
  • Ensure team(s) are well positioned for success; appropriate resource and skills levels are present and optimized to achieve strategic roadmap; evolve and optimize process for resource engagement: actively negotiate with Tech Leaders and key stakeholders to achieve clarity and alignment of priorities and outcomes.
  • Oversee the evolution, adoption and utilization of Travelers Design System; drive growth in design patterns and components, design tools and automations enabling a leaner, more agile product development cycle.
  • Develop a product design strategy that supports users’ needs, and ensures that UI, UX, concepting, prototyping, and actionable testing are interwoven in every step of the product lifecycle and development roadmap.
  • Partner with engineering and across the organization to establish strategic priorities, define product goals, drive accountability through outcomes and key results; and ensure that products achieve user needs, are built on time, align to strategic technology, adhere to design principles and are optimized for scale.
  • Responsible for maintaining healthy relationships with partners and stakeholders; sharing expertise, insight and perspective; leading and/or participating in strategy development and execution; leading through influence and with an innate ability to maintain relationship and focus while working through conflict
  • Is a visible, driving force in the Design community at Travelers and at large with unique ideas about creative process, problem solving, design leadership, innovation, emerging technology or similar.
  • Directs team to accomplish business, corporate and departmental goals and objectives.
  • Interacts with senior business and IT leadership to create strategic technology operational plans for area of organizational responsibilities. Could also interact with leaders across the enterprise.
  • Applies knowledge of current industry trends and techniques to strategically position the business and formulate solutions.
  • Responsible for providing consistent performance feedback/coaching and completing formal performance reviews.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • 5 years of technology or business related experience required.

Education, Work Experience, & Knowledge

  • There is a strong preference for a candidate possessing the following credentials and competencies:
  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, psychology, human factors, social sciences or related field preferred.
  • 10 years of technology or user experience related experience preferred.
  • Previous management experience
  • Proven strategic thought leadership and with demonstrated experience managing and scaling UX Design organization; crafting product solutions and game changing experiences.
  • Progressive experience in leading employees in multiple locations, and significant experience developing and implementing solutions. Strong leadership skills, leading by example, driving employee engagement through actions, and empowering employees to reach their full potential.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, build relationships and work effectively with internal and external partners. Demonstrated strong collaboration, negotiation and influencing skills in a highly matrixed organization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience creating and delivering compelling presentations to audiences inside and outside the company.
  • Experience working in eCommerce, B2B and/or B2B2

Job Specific Technical Skills & Competencies

  • Demonstrates strong hands on design experience and deep expertise in all facets of design i.e. Human Centered Design, Information Architecture, Interaction Design, User Research, Usability, Accessibility and Design Systems.
  • Experience working in an agile environment; applying, executing and managing design approaches and methods to create and deliver products and services.
  • Exhibits a high degree of initiative, self-motivation, and creativity while functioning well in a team environment. Gains consensus, leads, influences, and ensures cross discipline participation and feedback.
  • Ability to foster a user-centric, product-oriented culture, including usability and accessibility standards and practices.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to convey messages that build empathy and understanding through storytelling.
  • Problem solver with proven track record of developing creative solutions in alignment with strategic technology direction.
  • Ability to solve unique and complex problems; by applying accepted processes and/or work with abstract information creating new innovative approaches.
  • Demonstrates expert analytical and diagnostic skills dealing with issues that are often novel and not readily defined, lack known precedent or appear contradictory.
  • Understanding of basic front-end languages; knows the constraints of developing for multiple devices and how to create a unified experience across them.
  • Experience developing strategies for research and design including setting objectives, choosing appropriate activities, managing timelines, engaging stakeholders, etc.
  • Strong facilitator working with diverse groups of stakeholders and users in workshops and meetings to provide a productive, enjoyable, collaborative experience.
  • Familiarity using data to inform design decisions including experience with multi-variant testing, analytics and voice of customer feedback.
  • Ability with popular software for UI design and prototyping, such as Sketch, InVision, Figma, Axure, etc.
  • Provides direction and effectively leads by example to ensure that all services are meeting the stated business objectives on a timely basis with excellent quality, at a reasonable cost.
  • Able to develop solutions in alignment with strategic technology direction by applying accepted processes or is able to create new approaches to leverage technology from abstract information.
  • Demonstrates expert analytical and diagnostic skills dealing with issues that are often novel and not readily defined, lack known precedent or appear contradictory.
  • Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of organizational concepts and motivational methods.
  • Understands corporate and departmental objectives, and can relate them on a strategic, tactical and operational level to design technology solutions that provide a clear competitive business advantage.
