Job Description

The rapid expansion of 5G networks around the world opens up the possibility of massive-scale sensor deployment, allowing for the integration of every place, thing, and person into a connected global network of everything. Such a network has the potential to make real-time knowledge about our physical world broadly accessible, helping people solve everyday problems and manage their work and personal lives, ultimately saving people time and effort. Realizing this potential will require intelligent systems that can contextualize massive streams of distributed information and provide meaningful insights about our environment without requiring cognitive effort on the part of users. To this end, the Data and Devices – Video Analytics Group at Nokia Bell Labs is developing state-of-the-art artificial intelligence-based video systems for the real-time tracking and contextual understanding of people and objects. We perform research from fundamental machine learning model development and multi-sensor fusion techniques, to system-level architecture design, with end-to-end solutions deployed into real-world applications such as robotic vision for autonomous control, asset tracking in Enterprise environments, and Industrial surveillance.
We are seeking highly motivated, talented and enthusiastic students to take part in this year’s Bell Labs Summer Internship Program, ideally designed for graduate students (or exceptional undergraduates with research experience). Based on performance, candidates may also be considered for full-time employment. Students will have the opportunity to learn and work with a multi-disciplinary team of world experts, while contributing to the on-going efforts with their expertise and experience in a classical Bell Labs-style setting.

Job Responsibilities & Competencies

Depending on the intern’s interest and academic/research experience, interns will have a chance to partake in one of the following projects (or related work):

  • Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) for robotic grasping. Investigate approaches for autonomous robotic control with emphasis on determining optimal grasping policies from input video only. You will work with simulated and real robotic arms to demonstrate grasping generalization using multiple objects as seen from an overhead camera that has both RGB and ToF (depth) sensors or optionally a vison camera integrated in wrist of the robotic arm. This project advances earlier work in this space.
  • Contextual Scene analysis for understanding functional relationships between objects. Current ML methods allow for the accurate identification and tracking of people and objects in video frames. This project will seek to expand the current art to inferring functional relationships between detected objects and people.
  • AI/ML model optimization for scalable systems. Techniques for reducing computational resources of video analytics models – such as binarization, pruning, and merging multiple pre-trained models – will be investigated to enable deployment of advanced video tracking pipelines on minimal hardware resources. Solutions will be benchmarked in an Enterprise surveillance environment.
  • Explore novel AI model development for video analytics in areas including self-supervised learning, anomaly detection, multi-sensor fusion, and spatio-temporal algorithms for dynamic object tracking.


Student Criteria:
Overall GPA of 3.0/4.0 or above.
Must be enrolled as a full-time student, ideally in a PhD program.

Work Authorization: U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident preferred. Will accept students on F-1 Visa dependent upon program requirements or may consider sponsoring short-term J1 Visa PhD students dependent upon program requirements.
Education Requested: Must be pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or related field from an accredited college/university within the USA.
