Job Description

The Director, Public Policy and Alliance Development at Vertex Pharmaceuticals reports to the Senior Director, Public Policy and Alliance Development and will lead the strategy and execution of product- and disease-specific policy positions/initiatives for a pipeline asset(s). Pipeline areas of focus may include pain, Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, APOL-1 mediated kidney disease, Sickle Cell Disease, or Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. This role will work within PA as well as cross-functionally with other internal Vertex functions, including commercial, medical, R&D and legal to ensure alignment and progress around our corporate goals and objectives.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Create a focused policy strategy for the assigned disease area(s) by: (1) developing disease and product-specific policy positions and priorities, (2) engaging key external stakeholders and understanding their priorities, initiatives, and policy positions and (3) identifying opportunities for collaboration
  • Establish and manage relationships with national groups to achieve Vertex goals, bring value to patients, and enhance the Company’s standing and reputation
  • Collaborate with internal cross-functional team to execute on the strategic and tactical plan and identify opportunities for engagement with external partners
  • Manage product and therapeutic area policy issues, represent the PA function on internal teams (e.g., brand teams), and provide strategic counsel to functional leaders, brand teams and government affairs to ensure effective alignment with corporate policy positions.
  • Lead analysis of the external environment and anticipate trends specific to brand teams, advising brands on emerging and existing healthcare policies and trends, how they affect the operating environment, and identifying opportunities and challenges
  • Ensure compliant and transparent stakeholder engagement and embrace company principles to demonstrate commitment to patients and caregivers in the rare disease community
  • Mitigate areas of risk by monitoring key issues and trends, develop strategies to protect and enhance company reputation
  • Identify additional opportunities to advance our company’s business objectives
  • Fulfill other duties/projects, as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years current and relevant experience in the pharmaceutical industry and 5-7 years prior experience in patient advocacy, public health policy, government relations or related field(s);
  • Bachelor’s degree required. An advanced degree is highly desired
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated outstanding strategic planning, communication and presentation skills;
  • Ability to travel up to 35%;
  • Pharmaceutical sector or non-profit sector and therapeutic area experience required;
  • Experience in patient advocacy, government affairs, managed markets or public policy
  • A high level of energy and passion toward patients, science and public health;
  • Working knowledge and appreciation of the complexities of the drug development process and regulatory requirements;
  • Understanding of the patient and caregiver experience in rare diseases to include diagnosis, treatment, and treatment options preferred;
  • Proven teamwork and collaboration skills, with a demonstrated ability to interact and influence all levels of business;
  • Detail-oriented, self-initiating, well-organized and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously;
