Job Description

The Director of R&D Business Strategy is responsible for leading strategic operations for the R&D discovery engine. This role serves as a strategic partner to the Senior Vice Presidents of Research and Biotherapeutic and Medicinal Sciences (BTMS) and is an active member of their functional leadership teams to drive strategic alignment to portfolio priorities and lead critical functional initiatives. The role is responsible for providing strategic leadership to the functions, driving organizational excellence across discovery, supporting key initiatives and external collaborations, and optimizing resource allocation trade-offs to meet priorities.


Responsibilities


Provide strategic operations leadership

  • Act as a thought partner and advisor to the Senior Vice Presidents of BTMS and Research in identifying key priorities and strategic topics for discussion within their functions and jointly across the discovery engine portfolio
  • Optimize Leadership Team meetings by framing and facilitating strategic discussions to help to drive alignment and decision making
  • Communicate portfolio status and priorities, highlight risks and resource gaps to be addressed
  • Facilitate functional goal setting and regular reviews of prioritization and status


Drive organizational excellence

  • Partner with the Research and BTMS Leadership Teams to create appropriate governance, operating models, and coordination within the respective functions and across the discovery engine
  • Create and maintain cross-departmental relationships to enable leadership success
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities to drive business excellence, monitoring and leveraging innovations around new ways of working, approaches to increase effectiveness, and capabilities to maximize value; support the operationalization and develop and codify best practices


Manage key initiatives, Strategic Advisory Boards (SABs) and collaborations

  • Lead key strategic initiatives for the functions and ensure BTMS and Research representation on cross-functional initiatives
  • Develop collaboration strategy in partnership with Research and BTMS senior leaders, including management and review of progress for those initiatives
  • Liaise with the Strategic Alliances team to ensure collaborations and alliances are executed appropriately, including the establishment and maintenance of relevant firewalls
  • Implement workshop, symposia and other activities to maintain strong engagement with external collaboration partners and key opinion leaders and coordinate/shape SABs aligned to Research and BTMS priorities


Optimize portfolio alignment and trade-off decisions

  • Drive portfolio management across the discovery engine (e.g., exploratory targets, modality choices) and ensure robust discussions at governance (Discovery Portfolio Alignment Committee), in close partnership with the Portfolio Director and Governance teams
  • Partner closely with Business Operations and Finance to enable strategic resource allocation and trade-off discussions within the function
  • Ensure functional readiness for governance interactions and portfolio decision making by providing robust assessment on resourcing trade-offs, in close collaboration with Portfolio Directors, R&D Governance, Business Operations and Finance
  • Partner to shape portfolio priorities and develop trade-off scenarios for annual and long-range planning exercises

Qualifications
  • 8-10+ experience in Biotech and/or Pharmaceutical industry
  • Experience (minimum 2 years) in program management
  • Experience (minimum 2 years) in strategy development
  • Ability to lead within matrix and influence without authority through formal channels and informal network
  • Ability to work with agility, taking multi-faceted approaches to transfer knowledge and know-how, and form teams for follow-through
  • Financial acumen, with an ability to evaluate budgets accounting, business case development
  • Entrepreneurial behavior, capable to create/optimize opportunities and resources
  • Outstanding collaboration, communication and people skills
  • Excellent organizational and leadership abilities
  • Strong scientific background and understanding of drug discovery is critical


Education

  • Advanced science degree (Ph.D.) required, preferably in the area of Chemistry, Molecular Biology or Neuroscience; MBA is a plus
