Job Description

Job Summary

As an Engineer 1 in the Research and Technology Development department, you will support the development of novel microfluidic-based sequencing platforms. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team solving complex problems, investigating new research areas and working on integration challenges.

  • Hands-on testing, integration and optimization of microfluidic systems including fluidics, hardware, software, firmware and chemistry/reagents
  • Quickly fabricate and test prototyped microfluidic systems incl. the integration of simple control/automation routines using MATLAB/LabVIEW
  • Conduct system level measurements, assay testing and image analysis
  • Translate benchtop assays to prototype microfluidic systems
  • Use standard lab instrumentation: fluorescence microscopes, syringe pumps, valves, pressure controllers, leak tester, flow sensors, thermocyclers, bioanalyzers, DNA sequencers, fluorescence plate readers
  • Record and analyze complex data sets
  • Develop and implement experimental test plans under supervision
  • Develop creative solutions to troubleshoot issues
  • Willingness to be hands-on
  • Work collaboratively with chemists, biochemists and engineers developing new components of DNA analysis platforms
  • Use lab notebook, write reports and present experimental results at technical meetings to an audience with a broad background
  • Microfluidics incl. excellent knowledge of the physics of microscale regime fluid flow
  • 1-2 years of hands-on experience in lab environment incl. reagent delivery (pump/valve technologies), detection of biomolecules and/or DNA/RNA sample prep technologies
  • Experience with fluidic modeling tools such as COMSOL, and skills to create simple CAD models of e.g. microchips and manifolds using SolidWorks
  • Experience with prototyping microfluidic systems: 3D printers, CO2 laser, injection molding, optical microscopy, mechanical machining and characterization tools
  • Experience with statistical analysis and data analysis programs (JMP, MATLAB, Microsoft Excel)
  • 1-2 years of experience in product development is highly desired
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and successfully work across multiple disciplines including engineering, biology and software is highly desired
  • Experience with biological assays such as sequencing, library prep and PCR is desired
  • Organized and detail oriented
  • Clear communicator and a team player
  • Multidisciplinary approach to problem solving
  • A desire to be part of fast paced dynamic environment


Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering or Physics
