Job Description


He or she is responsible for complex technical work in a wide range of EHS disciplines. The EHS Engineer will support many development programs in Tesla’s cell engineering organization. He or She will serve as discipline lead for the EHS Engineering team, interacting with many multi-disciplinary teams (cell engineering, technology development, manufacturing engineering, factory design, facility engineering, etc.); ensure regulatory compliance can be met in new equipment, processes, facilities and designs, perform process and facility risk assessments, and implement EHS industry best practices. The engineer will play a key role in the sustainable design and operation of Tesla’s business.

The overall charter is risk reduction and pollution prevention within the company’s cell engineering organization. The candidate must work well on company expansion projects, self-initiated projects and those driven by concerns and issues reported by employees. The ideal candidate takes pride in his/her knowledge of regulations, analytical abilities, organization skills, attention to detail and ability to solve problems quickly and creatively.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Lead equipment safety design by working closely with lead manufacturing design engineer
  • Perform air emissions assessments against relevant air district and state/federal requirements and thresholds, including system design for permitting or exemption.
  • Lead mechanical ventilation and emission control system requirements design with lead mechanical design engineer
  • Lead electrical classifications for equipment and areas by working closely with lead electrical design engineer
  • Lead occupancy classification based on activities and hazards present in areas by working closely with lead Architect
  • Lead emergency monitoring and life safety system design by working closely with lead controls engineer
  • Produce detailed engineering reports when needed (Life Safety, Fire Protection, Air Emissions, etc.)
  • Ensure Process Safety Management, Risk Management Program and/or California Accidental Release Protection compliance requirements are met within system and process designs by working closely with lead process engineer.
  • Ensure equipment meets all state and federal standards for radiation and laser protection. Obtain registrations and licenses as needed.
  • Own hazardous material classification according to various agencies (CBC, CFC, NFPA, IBC, GHS, etc.)
  • Monitor proposed hazardous material inventories against various thresholds and ensure appropriate protective measures are in place where necessary
  • Act as Project Manager on any major project EHS reviews (CEQA, City planning commission, etc.)
  • Perform process EHS review/approval as part of the Management of Change (MOC) process
  • Support startup and equipment commissioning operations through creative problem solving to meet aggressive timelines while maintaining safe and compliant operation.
  • Perform EHS design reviews of equipment and process designs and perform buyoffs of equipment upon startup.
  • Participate in EHS audits and investigations.

Skills & Experience:

  • B. S. in Engineering (Environmental, Safety, Chemical or closely related industry), MS preferred.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA and various state agency regulations
  • At least 5 years of related work experience
  • Ability to read and understand Process and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs), Architectural permit sets, CAD drawings
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational and planning skills, facilitation skills, computer skills.
  • Ability to achieve results through others.
  • Creative, flexible, analytical and detailed oriented.
  • Interprets, recommends and provides guidance for local, state and federal regulations across all EHS disciplines.
  • Interacts with Tesla Senior Leadership and program management on project milestones and status. Escalates issues in effective manner with creative problem-solving solutions.
  • Excellent understanding of sustainability and environmental topics and fundamentals (such as: sustainable design, planning policy, waste, carbon/energy, responsible sourcing, water, land use change, biodiversity, and certification systems)
  • Experience interacting with interdisciplinary project teams and international partners
  • Experience with data visualization and data analysis
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information in a concise way to a non-technical audience, and vice versa
  • Ability to manage and organize multiple projects with competing priorities and different timescales (i.e.: checkpoints with long-term goals while completing shorter term goals)
  • Demonstrated passion for human safety, environmentally sustainable practices, risk reduction and pollution prevention.
  • CHMM, CSP, RSO, LSO, CIH and/or QSP certification(s) a plus
