Job Description

Job Title: Pharmacy Intern FLSA: Non-Exempt

Department: Pharmacy Revision Date: 05/2011

General Function:

Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service. Fills and verifies prescriptions and counsels patients in accordance with all state and federal statutes and regulations under supervision of registered pharmacist. Assists with pharmacy’s inventory, including controlled substances, on an annual basis or as recommended.

Reporting Relations:

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director, Assistant Store Director; Managers GM, Perishables, and Store Operations, Assistant Managers, Pharmacy Manager, Staff Pharmacists, Pharmacy Supervisor

Direct Reports: None

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people.
  • Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee’s designated department or elsewhere in the store.
  • Makes an effort to learn customers’ names and to address them by name whenever possible.
  • Assists customers by: (examples include)
  • escorting them to the products they’re looking for
  • securing products that are out of reach
  • loading or unloading heavy items
  • making note of and passing along customer suggestions or requests
  • performing other tasks in every way possible to enhance the shopping experience.
  • Answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service to customers who call.
  • Assists with controlled substance inventory on an annual basis or as recommended.
  • Assists with inventory control, maintaining inventory levels by ordering and stocking merchandise, checking invoices, and entering inventory information into the computer.
  • Assists HBC manager with ordering and merchandising OTC’s.
  • Fills prescriptions and counsels patients according to OBRA ’90 regulations.
  • Assists with monthly inventory.
  • Builds growth and sales through counseling and wellness programs.
  • Follows security and regulatory procedures including Quality Assurance Programs.
  • Maintains a professional appearance, i.e. clean lab coat and name tag.
  • Adheres to company policies and individual store guidelines.
  • Reports to work when scheduled and on time.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Partners with other departments or staff (i.e. dietitian) to promote wellness and the pharmacy.
  • Assists in other areas of the store as needed.
  • Performs other job related duties and special projects as required.

Education and Experience:

Enrolled in accredited college of pharmacy and registered with State Pharmacy Board as an intern. Six months or less of similar or related work experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to physically exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Visual requirements include vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet with or without correction, depth perception, color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), and field of vision.
  • Must be able to perform the following physical activities: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics:

  • Must have the ability to do logical or scientific thinking to solve problems; several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Have the ability to do arithmetic calculations involving arithmetic, algebraic and geometric calculations.
  • Must be able to compose original correspondence; follow technical manuals; have increased contact with people; interview counsel or advise people; evaluate technical data.

Working Conditions:

This position frequently involves a fast work pace in a retail store setting. Must be able to handle multiple tasks (filling scripts, answering telephone, waiting on customers, etc.) every day. There is an occasional exposure to dangerous chemicals/solvents while compounding products and chemotherapy drugs.

Equipment Used to Perform Job:

PC with pharmacy software and printer, cash register, Telexon ordering unit, pharmacy balance, scanner, calculator, telephone, fax, and copier.

Confidentiality:

Maintains the confidentiality of the customer’s private medical information according to the HIPAA act. Maintains the confidentiality of prescription drug pricing and costs.

Financial Responsibility:

Is fully responsible for company assets including prescription inventory, third party accounts receivable, pharmacy computer and software, and pharmacy fixtures.

Contacts:

Has daily contact with customers, general public, and suppliers/vendors, and pharmacy operations support staff. Has occasional contact with community or trade/professional organizations and federal/state governmental or regulatory agencies.

I understand that this pharmacy handles and prepares hazardous drugs. The USP 800 is intended to ensure that personnel of reproductive capability understand the risks of handling hazardous drugs. Accordingly, I acknowledge that exposure to hazardous drugs may cause acute and chronic effects. Failure to follow pharmacy policies and procedures may put me at greater risk of exposure to hazardous drugs.

Pharmacy Intern


SCHEDULE
: Every 3rd weekend (16 hours, first shift primarily) and then 10 weeks every summer and 2 weeks over the December break (40 hours weekly, 1st shift).


JOB SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, prepares, dispenses and distributes medications to patients. While under supervision, may perform all acts constituting the practice of pharmacy. Opportunities to shadow clinical pharmacists will be provided on the intern’s own time as staffing permits.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent and current enrollment in an accredited College of Pharmacy required.


LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION:

  • A pharmacy intern does not require a license from the Board of Pharmacy, but all interns seeking practical pharmacy experience toward licensure as a pharmacist must register with the Board’s internship program on forms provided by the Board.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Under general supervision of a pharmacist, performs duties of a pharmacy technician such as filling medication orders, delivering medications, compounding sterile and non-sterile preparations, obtaining medications histories, etc.
2. Provides pharmacy service to the patient care areas and customers.
3. Under the supervision of a pharmacist, reviews and interprets prescriptions for inpatients and outpatients to ensure appropriate use of medications.
4. Under the supervision of a pharmacist, contacts and confers with physicians concerning the appropriate drug, dose, dosing interval, drug allergy and drug-drug interaction, etc.
5. Under the supervision of a pharmacist, counsels patients.
6. Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.

A Pharmacy Intern position is complex work in hospital pharmacy and is primarily an educational requirement for licensure by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy. Work is performed in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures. Effective performance requires judgment and action under direct supervision of a professional pharmacist as required by the Ohio Code. Applies and understand requirement of specific dispensing requirements due to age related difference. Provides care to neonates, infants, pediatric, adolescents and geriatric patients under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assists the pharmacist in providing pharmaceutical care to ensure optimal patient outcome
  • Follows Federal, State and Local laws and regulation in regards to medication control
  • Dispenses and checks all medication and associated products with absolute accuracy and professional judgment
  • Manages inventory, departmental policies and procedures, money and other fiscal responsibilities as required
  • Performs related accountabilities/responsibilities as required or directed
  • Maintains positive working relationships
  • Demonstrates effective communications
  • Demonstrates initiative and accepts accountability with work related issues

Job Responsibilities/Tasks

Customer Experience

  • Engages customers and patients by greeting them and offering assistance with products and services. Resolves customer issues and answers questions to ensure a positive customer experience.
  • Models and shares customer service best practices with all team members to deliver a distinctive and delightful customer experience, including interpersonal habits (e.g., greeting, eye contact, courtesy, etc.) and Walgreens service traits (e.g., offering help proactively, identifying needs, servicing until satisfied, etc.).
  • Develops strong relationships with customers.


Operations

  • Learn from store and pharmacy team members, field leadership, team members and customers/patients
  • Under the supervision by the pharmacist, assist in the practice of pharmacy, in accordance with state, federal, and company policy. Reviews and complies with the Walgreen Co. Pharmacy Code of Conduct.
  • Performs duties as assigned and supervised by the pharmacist in accordance with Walgreens standard operating procedures for entering, third party processing, filling, and dispensing prescriptions.
  • Assists pharmacists and other healthcare providers in delivering patient care and services that are within the state scope of practice for pharmacy interns including patient counseling and other health services (i.e. blood pressure, medication therapy management).
  • Immediately reports prescription errors to pharmacist on duty and adheres to Company policies and procedures in relation to pharmacy errors and the Quality Improvement Program.
  • Strictly adheres to the Walgreen Co. policy regarding Good Faith Dispensing
  • Responsible and accountable for registering all related sales on assigned cash register, collects and handles cash as required. Takes customer to OTC aisle when possible to assist in locating products.
  • Handles telephone calls that do not require personal attention of the pharmacist, including those to physicians.
  • Assists and supports Pharmacy Department on inventory management activities, such as, ordering, unpacking, checking and storing shipment of pharmaceuticals. Maintains knowledge of Company asset protection techniques, and files claims for warehouse overages (merchandise received, but not billed), shortages (merchandise billed, but not received), order errors or damaged goods involving Rx drugs.
  • Assists with exterior and interior maintenance by ensuring the Pharmacy Department is stocked with adequate supplies, clean, neat and orderly in condition and appearance.
  • Complies with all company policies and procedures; maintains respectful relationships with coworkers.
  • Complete special assignments and other tasks as assigned.


Training & Personal Development

  • Complete required training
  • Maintains knowledge and skill in healthcare and pharmacy, including latest news and developments.


Basic Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in a school of Pharmacy program
  • Must be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English. (Except in Puerto Rico)
  • Requires willingness to work flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefer six months of experience in a retail environment.
  • Prefer to have prior work experience with Walgreens.
  • Prefer good math skills so they can fill prescriptions accurately, including counting, measuring and weighing medications.
