Are you a self-proclaimed “plant nerd”? Does contributing to the recovery of ecosystems, threatened flora and fauna excite you? Would you enjoy working in a remote, rugged environment as part of a small passionate team? If so, this could be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. The Rēkohu/Wharekauri/Chatham Islands District Office is looking for an enthusiastic biodiversity ranger to join our team and lead our flora work programme.
The Chatham Island archipelago has the highest level of endemism of any New Zealand biogeographic region with approximately 47 endemic plant taxa, a significant number of which are threatened. In the absence of many of the tree species that dominate mainland New Zealand forests, the Chathams boast the largest members of several former shrub genera including the largest Coprosma, Hebe, Olearia, Corokia and Dracophyllum. A centre for megaherb diversity, two outstanding specimens are the only members of their genera in New Zealand: the famous Chatham Island forget-me-not and the Chatham Island sow thistle.
As part of your role you will lead vegetation survey and monitoring work on the main Chatham and Pitt Islands, not to mention our crowning glories, predator free Nature Reserves Rangatira/South East and Mangere Islands. The role will also include managing and implementing planting programmes for threatened plants and ecosystem restoration which will involve you working closely with our onsite nursery staff. Ecosystem restoration is essential to our larger threatened fauna work programme, with notable species including the Chatham Island oystercatcher (dune restoration) and black robin (coastal broadleaf forest restoration). As well as overseeing planting and vegetation survey/monitoring work programmes, you will be responsible for the data management, report writing and evidence tracking pertaining to this work.
You may be required to contribute to other programmes of work at times which may include nursery support, weed control, fauna work, predator control and/or fencing work. Experience or interest in one or more of these areas would be advantageous.
Life on the Chatham Islands is quite different to mainland New Zealand in some key respects. The community is close-knit, welcoming and family friendly. There are added logistical complexities with transport, freight and communications. However, life is often simpler and very connected to the land and sea.

For too long our lives have been dominated by the ‘under one roof’ Industrial Revolution model of work. That era is now over. There is no longer a reason for the daily roll call, of the need to be seen with your butt on your seat in the office. The technology to work remotely and to avoid the daily grind of commuting and meetings has finally come of age, and bestselling authors Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson are the masters of making it work at tech company 37signals. Remote working is the future – and it is rushing towards us.
