A Day in the Life
This Senior Clinical Systems Engineer position will support the Clinical Engineering team and be a key member of the Systems Architecture group working to commercialize a Surgical Robotics Platform.

Clinical Engineering links Research and Development to the clinical setting by working closely with engineers and clinicians from pre-concept, through product development, to commercialization. We bring in-depth knowledge of the clinical environment and collaboration with clinicians to the design process with cross-functional R&D. Combined, we define and develop the function of products within the robotic platform to ultimately improve outcomes for the patient. Clinical Engineering input primarily contributes to the User Needs, Design Input, and Design Process stages of product development, integrating products into robotic clinical applications.

This role will involve working closely with our team of Clinical Engineers to represent clinical use of our device to both internal and external audiences. This position will focus on quantifying the clinical environment, usage analysis, preclinical lab execution, and procedure specific system setup.

You will:
Responsible for supporting the Clinical Engineering team, the successful candidate must be able to work independently, handle multiple tasks in parallel and communicate effectively with internal and external teams. This role will participate in the R&D process through a variety of means:

  • Clinical Expertise
    • Apply knowledge of the operating room environment and of medical technology in order to become an expert within the company on the clinical application of its products
    • Maintain awareness of clinical applications of MDT Surgical Robotics products, transferring product knowledge to the larger team as part of product development and commercialization activities
  • Product Development Process
    • Pre-concept: Anticipating patient and customer needs
    • Clinical Product Definition: Translating user needs to customer/clinical requirements
    • Clinical Use Definition: Characterizing system use for use throughout PDP
    • Product Development: Represent clinical setting, clinician, and patient throughout development process
  • Clinical Implementation: Applying our product to the procedural setting
    • Develop system specific setup to aid in end-user application of the robotic system to clinical use
    • Drive user-centric product vision to ensure successful integration with existing clinical workflows in a real-world environment
    • Analyze user feedback and provide clinical input to greater systems architecture team
    • Support clinical evaluation of new or enhanced products at key customer sites
  • Clinician Engagement
    • Work with Key Opinion Leaders to gain clinical knowledge and translate user needs to engineering development teams
    • Partner with clinical and non-clinical stakeholders in order to evaluate and expand Surgical Robotics program
  • Cross-functional Clinical Input
    • Support engineering regarding clinical risks and mitigations
    • Support FDA/regulatory documentation and applications
Must Have: Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 4 years of related experience, or advanced degree and 2 years of relevant experience.

Nice to Have
Engineering Degree in Biomedical, Robotic, or another applicable field. Advanced degree preferred.
4-10 years of Engineering or Medical experience
Working knowledge of human anatomy; preferred experience with surgical terminology and minimally invasive products
Product development or test method/protocol development experience
Experience with statistical tools (JMP, Minitab, MatLab)
Solid problem solving and analytical skills, while maintaining a creative perspective to complex problems
Ability for interpreting, analyzing and translating information
Proven spatial/kinematic aptitude; preferred background in robotic or complex projects
Comfortable communicating in a professional manner with end users
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated desire to learn and achieve
Experience working with cross functional teams
Physical capabilities to perform the job:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to be independently mobile. The employee is also required to use a computer and communicate with peers and co-workers via a variety of media including telephone, email, instant message, social networking platforms, and in-person meetings.

Work Environment
Office environment where the employee would be standing and sitting most of the day at a desk or in a conference room for meetings. Lab sessions with robotic system where the employee would be standing and manipulating the robotic system and/or test fixtures.
Occasional domestic travel required. Some foreign travel may be required.
