Senior Principal Opto-Mechanical Engineer

Adaptive Optics Associates – Xinetics (AOA Xinetics), a wholly-owned Northrop Grumman Space Systems, Payload and Ground Systems Division Business Venture, is currently seeking a Senior Principal Opto-Mechanical Engineer to support Xinetics business activities in Devens MA.

AOA Xinetics (AOX) is a leader in developing ‘smart’ electro-optical and opto-mechanical products. Across its three Business Areas Xinetics, Image Metrology and Special Programs, AOX designs, manufactures and services optical & photonic solutions world-wide. Our customers include Government, Industrial, U.S. Defense Primes and Second-tier Contractors; Markets for these technologies include astronomy, logistics, and defense missions such as directed energy and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (i.e. ISR); several potential direct and adjacent market segments also exist.

AOX excels in a range of applications from adaptive optical systems, deformable mirrors, wavefront sensors, and sub-nanometer precision actuators to photonic systems that acquire and process data in real time for a variety of high-availability applications. AOX’s market offerings include lightweight passive and active CERAFORMTM and CERAPRINTTM silicon carbide (SiC) optics and precision structures as well as large and small precision opto-mechanical systems supporting electronics and sophisticated controls software.

Overview

Reporting to the Xinetics Engineer Manager, the Senior Principal Opto-Mechanical Engineer will perform mechanical design and analysis for space, ground and airborne optical systems, tooling, and test equipment; this includes leading engineering design efforts of complex electro-optical and opto-mechanical systems, designing hardware that satisfies system requirements, documenting design approaches, detailing parts and assembly drawings to support the development, manufacture, and test of optical systems. Additionally, you will support new business opportunities and mentor, lead and develop junior engineers, designers and technicians.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform opto-mechanical and electro-mechanical engineering on multiple projects through all phases of development and manufacturing
  • Create part and assembly models, detailed drawings and associated parts lists, in accordance with AMSE Y14.5 and AOX drawing standards
  • Conduct peer reviews of other engineer’s work products
  • Execute new opto-mechanical designs with a focus on DFM
  • Perform analysis of optics, mounting strategies, detailed geometric tolerances, manufacturability, and cost
  • Support transition to production and manufacturing engineering
  • Provide technical solutions to complex problems which require regular use of technical acumen, ingenuity and creativity
  • Perform trade studies, design of experiments, assembly and testing of parts, components, and assemblies
  • Provide technical content for proposals, estimate and track mechanical design costs, create schedule estimates, and make presentations to customers and company management
  • Travel to customer and supplier sites as required
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 9+ years of hands on opto-mechanical design and development
  • Demonstrated understanding of mechanical and opto-mechanical design best practices and basic understanding of the other engineering disciplines
  • Proficient with opto-mechanical analysis and FEA
  • Experience in free space lens and mirror mounting techniques – large and small
  • Flexure and kinematic mount design
  • Knowledge of various adhesive applications and bonding techniques in opto-mechanical designs
  • Working knowledge of optical assembly, alignment, test equipment and tools
  • Self-driven, strong analytical and problem resolution skills, attention to detail, and ability to work competing priorities in a deadline driven highly technical work environment
  • Strong collaborator with excellent verbal/written communication and presentation skills
  • Proficient in MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Project)
  • Proficient Solidworks skills (or similar)
  • US Citizenship is a requirement for employment
  • Ability to obtain a Top Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 7 years of hands on opto-mechanical design and development
  • Silicon Carbide/Ceramic material experience
  • Athermalized telescope design and optics mounting in a space environment
  • Adhesive applications in ultrahigh vacuum
  • Interferometer and optical alignment experience
  • Working knowledge of geometric optics, wave optics, Gaussian propagation, and aberration theory
  • Finite Element Analysis using NASTRAN or Ansys
  • Sigfit, Zemax, or Matlabs software skills
  • Active Top Secret Clearance

Physical Requirements:

  • Travel up to 10% of the time as required
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of times and light physical effort required
